We start off part one by interviewing Michele DiTomas, who has been the longstanding Medical Director of the Hospice unit and currently is also the Chief Medical Executive for the Palliative care Initiative with the California Correctional Healthcare Services. It was built in 1955, so it wasn’t designed for a geriatric population.

Hospice services can be provided at home or in inpatient facilities with staff experienced in end-of-life care. Hospice physicians may also have additional certifications such as geriatrics, oncology, or palliative care to demonstrate their knowledge of this field.

It was started by a social worker who really saw some gaps in care with those at end-of-life, particularly those with chronic long-term illness, having important conversations. Malaz: One day I was in internal medicine residency and I had to take care of a patient who was admitted from a nursing home with dementia. For me, right now, the worst thing, my nightmare is dying from dementia alone in a nursing home. People start thinking about putting them in a nursing home.
