Since 2020, the company has been beleaguered by the staffing shortage, reduced lengths of stay, and disruption in skilled nursing, senior housing, and to some extent acute-care referrals. The company saw nursing home admissions jump 6.2%, but sustained a 23.4% drop among those referred from hospitals.

Don’t get me wrong, the evidence points to cost savings, but as Chris Callahan and Kathleen Unroe pointed out in a JAGS editorial in 2020 “in comprehensive dementia care models, savings may accrue to Medicare, but the expenses accrue to a fluid and unstable network of local service providers, patients, and their families.” Diane: Fantastic.

I’m a geriatrically trained social worker and it was my grandmother. It was designed to really balance what Medicaid at the time was to provide nursing homes and Medicare is obviously health insurance. They’re older and frailer than a nursing home client is. Greg: Yeah, great question.
