The Merkels keenly felt the lack of compassionate care options for the dying. So Ann and David decided to do what they could to start hospice services locally. In 1982 Medicare authorized reimbursement for hospice care. Jimmy Bevilacqua served as the required compounding pharmacist available 24 hours/day.
