Hospices often lack the financial and staffing resources needed to fully support bereaved families. As with nursing, the industry-wide labor shortage has impacted bereavement care, which is an underfunded service, according to Dr. Dawn Gross, palliative care physician at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Health.

Proposed federal legislation could advance the development of an evidence-based definition of “high-quality” bereavement care. The language appears in the 2023 appropriations bill for the departments of Labor, Health & Human Services, Education, and related agencies. In addition, these services are not reimbursed.

Hospices, in aggregate, are showing improvement on the quality measure for visits in the last days of life. In Calendar Year 2021, the share of hospice care days with nurse visits in the last seven days of life rose to 63%, up from 62% year over year, according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO).

After taking hits during the pandemic, nonprofit hospices are seeing supplemental revenue from resale thrift stores rebound. Many hospice organizations operate these stores to raise money for their programs. Virginia-based Blue Ridge Hospice has expanded into Loudoun County in its home state with a de novo office. The hospice has also begun to offer inpatient care in the county at Inova Loudoun Hospital. Close to 40,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Virginia elected hospice in 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau reported.

The bereavement care tech platform Grief Coach has rebranded as Help Texts and is expanding its services to include support for health care workers who are contending with stress or burnout. The startup’s business model includes partnerships with hospices. Help Texts has been on a consistent growth trajectory, Payne told Hospice News.
