Clinicians face relatively high rates of burnout “due to the secondary trauma and emotional exhaustion that develops from working with death and dying daily,” Aprille Waldrop, social services manager for Florida-based Hospice of Health First told Palliative Care News. The Nashville-headquartered organization recently secured a $60 million funding round to expand its health services for cancer patients, including palliative care and programs to address social determinants. Also in 2020 came the launch of partnership between Livio Health and cancer care provider Minnesota Oncology.

The health care startup currently provides interdisciplinary services in 28 states to 30,000 seniors who suffer from chronic health conditions and social determinants issues. This is up from 1,700 patients in three states in 2020.

Don’t get me wrong, the evidence points to cost savings, but as Chris Callahan and Kathleen Unroe pointed out in a JAGS editorial in 2020 “in comprehensive dementia care models, savings may accrue to Medicare, but the expenses accrue to a fluid and unstable network of local service providers, patients, and their families.” Diane: Fantastic.
