That year Medicare determined that dying was no longer a diagnosis that warranted a hospital admission. Families were struggling to manage the death of their loved ones unsupported at home. In 1982 Medicare authorized reimbursement for hospice care. Dr. David Merkel served as Medical Director of Hospice until his death in 2012.
