Whatever’s required of our employees, we require of our volunteers. That’s important because volunteers enter patients’ homes. Our volunteers help fill that need.”

The number of hospice volunteers plunged during the first two years of the pandemic, and many are still working to rebuild their ranks. Many hospices saw volunteer volumes dip drastically as they suspended activities during the pandemic. Volunteers also help reduce providers’ costs.

Centers for Medicaid & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2020 issued a number of flexibilities intended to ease burdens on health care providers during the pandemic. This included the temporary lifting of the requirement that volunteers provide at least 5% of hospice patient care hours.
