Bartlett Regional Hospital Gets Green Light to Take Over Hospice Services, Executives Step Down

Alaska-based Bartlett Regional Hospital recently received approval from legislators to relaunch hospice and home health services nearly a year after a local provider shut down. The news came shortly before the retirement and resignation of the hospital’s CEO and COO. The hospital sought hospice licensure in the certificate of need state after Hospice and Home Care of Juneau (HHCJ) halted services last October, citing high staffing costs and insufficient nursing resources.

Study Finds 50% of Nurses Have Side Hustles for Extra Income

A new survey from connectRN and The Nursing Beat found half of over 1300 American nurses polled have side hustles outside of nursing to earn extra income. Additionally, nearly half of the new nurses (in the profession for less than three years) plan on transitioning their side hustle to their full-time job. Eight in ten of those nurses have ambitions to start their own businesses.

Hospice Providers Getting Mixed Messages on GIP Utilization, Length of Stay

The 2024 final hospice payment rule included a modest payment increase for general inpatient care (GIP) at a time when regulators are zeroing in on increased utilization and longer stays. The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) included in the rule a 1.031% increase to hospice GIP services. Daily rates for general inpatient services were set at $1,145.31, up from FY2023’s rate of $1,110.76.

Hospice of the Chesapeake Achieves 145% Census Growth Since 2020 Charles County Acquisition

Hospice of the Chesapeake has exceeded its growth expectations since its 2020 acquisition of Hospice of Charles County. At the transaction’s closing, the acquisition boosted Hospice of the Chesapeake’s average daily census to more than 620, up from 580. Since then, the nonprofit’s average daily census in the Charles County region has increased 145%, the organization reported.
