The number of registered nurse and social worker visits during a patient’s final week is one of the seven quality measures that CMS uses to evaluate providers. Social worker visits in the last days of life also rose to 9% in 2021, up from 7% in 2020. In 2019, for example, the percentage was 66%.

The hospice is among the largest multi-regional players and has grown seven times larger since private equity firm Webster Equity Partners purchased the company in 2017. Hospice of Southern Maine’s is also onboarding social workers Elizabeth Leclaire and Sara Olmsted, as well as Maria McCann as bereavement support counselor.

This will make the organization’s third center for youth bereavement in the area, with additional locations in Auburndale and Sebring, Florida. The Hosparus Health Resource Center will extend bereavement services and education to underserved communities in that area.
