Time to Hire a Caregiver?

It can be difficult to know when it’s time to hire a caregiver for an elderly loved one. You may be feeling guilty and thinking you have to do it all on your own. That is not true. Here are three signs that may indicate it’s time to consider bringing in some additional help.

Medication

One of the signs that you should consider outsourcing care for your loved one, is when you notice they are forgetting to take their medication. As we age, our short-term memory sometimes falters. It happens to most of us. If you notice extra pills in the organizer, that may mean your loved one could use some medication reminders. If they live alone or are home for long periods of time by themselves, it could be time for someone to come help with daily routines and longer periods of supervision. Skipping medication can lead to more serious complications. So, medication reminders are important.

Activities of Daily Living

Is your loved one having difficulty performing daily activities such as bathing or getting dressed, even cooking or eating? Lifting themselves in and out of the shower or even bed can lead to falls and more health complications nobody wants. A caregiver can provide assistance and supervision with daily tasks that can otherwise become life-and-death situations to ensure that your loved one stays well, clean, and healthy.

Heavy Burden

It is normal to have a hard time managing your loved one’s care on your own. Caring for an elderly loved one can be challenging on so many levels, emotionally and physically. It is important you maintain your health while making sure they receive the attention and support they need. This may mean asking for help. A caregiver can provide valuable assistance and help ease the pressure on you and other family members.

These are just a few indications it might be time to hire a caregiver. Everyone is different and you personally know when things are not what they need to be. Pay attention to what you need. It may be time to lift the pressure off of you. Support and help are available. They can provide in-home care so your elderly loved one doesn’t have to be displaced either. A caregiver can provide the valuable assistance you both deserve.
