AAHPM reached out to the 2024 Visionaries to gain insight into what motivated them to pursue leadership positions and what they find more fulfilling in their experiences. Rabia Atayee, PharmD BCPS FAAHPM has been recognized as one of the exceptional individuals chosen as a 2024 AAHPM Visionary in Hospice and Palliative Care.
Who has most influenced your work and how have they shaped your contributions?
I am immensely grateful for the influential figures who have shaped my journey in Hospice and Palliative Care (HAPC). Drs. Charles von Gunten, Lynn McPherson, Rosene Pirrello, and Gary Buckholz played a pivotal role in introducing me to the field and facilitating a seamless transition into this specialty. Their mentorship provided the foundation for my passion and dedication to HAPC. I extend my appreciation to my pharmacist colleague mentors, Drs. Brookie Best and Linda Awdishu, who have not only been exemplary professionals but trailblazers for women in science. Their commitment and achievements have inspired me to navigate my own path in the field, breaking barriers and contributing to the advancement of palliative care. A special acknowledgment goes to Dr. Kyle Edmonds, my valued colleague in research, teaching, and clinical care. Working alongside Dr. Edmonds has been an enriching experience, and I couldn’t have asked for a better teammate. His collaboration has undoubtedly shaped my contributions to HAPC, fostering a spirit of teamwork and shared dedication to our common goals.
Lastly, my deepest gratitude extends to my family, whose unwavering support has been the bedrock of my pursuit of a meaningful career in HAPC. Their encouragement and understanding have allowed me to focus on making a difference in the lives of those facing serious illnesses. In summary, the collective influence of these mentors, colleagues, and my supportive family has profoundly shaped my approach to HAPC, molding me into a dedicated professional with a commitment to excellence and meaningful contributions in the field.

I am truly honored and grateful to be recognized as a ‘Visionary’ in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This acknowledgment is not just a personal achievement, but a testament to the collective efforts of our palliative program at UC San Diego and the shared commitment to advancing the field. Being labeled as a ‘Visionary’ underscores the importance of innovation and forward-thinking in our approach to patient care. In Hospice and Palliative Medicine, where the focus is on providing compassionate and comprehensive care for individuals facing serious illness, being a ‘Visionary’ means embracing new approaches to patient care can enhance the quality of life for patients and their families. It signifies a dedication to pushing boundaries, improving standards of care, and ultimately making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.
What is your aspiration for the evolution of hospice and Palliative Medicine?
In this evolving landscape, I hope to see increased collaboration among interdisciplinary teams, fostering seamless communication and coordination. By integrating the expertise of various healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses/nurse practitioners, social workers, chaplains, and pharmacists, we can provide more personalized and tailored care plans that meet the unique needs of each patient.
