Hospice of the Chesapeake Unifies Brands Under Single Identity

Maryland-based Hospice of the Chesapeake and its affiliates are unifying under the organization’s main brand.

Effective April 1, affiliates Calvert Hospice and Hospice of Charles County will be known as Hospice of the Chesapeake.

The unification will “allow for greater consistency across the Hospice of the Chesapeake service area,” the hospice and palliative care provider indicated in an announcement. “Calvert Hospice and Hospice of Charles County are proud to be part of the Hospice of the Chesapeake family and look forward to contributing to the future success of the organization.”

Established in 1979 as Arundel Hospice, the nonprofit organization began operating under its current name in 1992. In addition to providing hospice, the organization offers grief support and palliative care services at the Chesapeake Supportive Care and Chesapeake Life Center. Both facilities will retain their individual names following the brand unification.

The hospice provides services in four Maryland counties lining the west coastal region of the Chesapeake Bay. 

Calvert Hospice affiliated with Hospice of the Chesapeake in June last year, not long after Hospice of Charles County in fall 2020. Financial terms of both transactions were undisclosed.

“We believe this acquisition … will strengthen, and expand the care provided to patients and their families in Calvert County,” Hospice of the Chesapeake CEO Mike Brady previously told Hospice News. “As well as create a combined organization that is focused on the full care continuum across our region — serving everyone who needs us, at the right time, in the right place and with the care they deserve.”

Picking up the nonprofit assets made the organization one of the largest providers in the region. The hospice in 2021 cared for more than 3,800 hospice patients as well as more than 2,095 on palliative care and close to 500 in bereavement.

That same year Hospice of Chesapeake moved forward on plans to upgrade the care center they acquired with Hospice of Charles County. The combined organization updated every floor of a three-level building located in Waldorf, Maryland, financed with a $200,000 bond secured with the aid of state legislators and donations from the community and another large philanthropic donor.

Services available at the updated facility include end-of-life, palliative and bereavement care.

“Since the acquisition of each affiliate, residents of Charles and Calvert counties have benefitted along the entire care continuum that includes supportive, hospice and grief care,” the hospice stated in the announcement. “These benefits include community-based palliative care, community education and awareness, increased options for grief support, and more help in navigating the journey of advanced illness.”
