St. Croix Hospice Opens Wisconsin De Novo

St. Croix Hospice has expanded in Wisconsin, opening its 14th location in the state.

The de novo is located in the Chippewa Falls community. St. Croix, a portfolio company of the private equity firm H.I.G. Capital, now has 200 interdisciplinary team members serving 65 Wisconsin counties.

“We have been serving the state of Wisconsin for many years, continuing our long tradition of exceptional patient care,” St. Croix Hospice CEO Heath Bartness said in a press release. “That reputation of excellence leads more patients, families and facilities to seek our services.”

Adults 65 and older accounted for 17.5% of Wisconsin’s overall population during 2019, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, which reported that 11.6% of this same age demographic resided in the city of Madison. The Badger State’s population of seniors 60 and older was outpacing the growth of other age groups in 2012 and is projected to increase with an uptick of nearly 36% by 2030.

More than 35,000 people received hospice care in Wisconsin in 2021, according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

St. Croix cares for over 4,000 patients from 60 locations in 10 Midwestern states. The company last October moved into Indiana with its acquisition of Adaptive Hospice for an undisclosed amount. Other recent deals include the acquisition of Michigan-based Corpore Sano Hospice as well as Illinois-based Lexington Hospice Care last summer. Financial terms for these transactions were undisclosed.

The company also launched five de novos in 2022, in Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Kansas.

“There is tremendous demand for hospice care in the Chippewa Valley, and our new Chippewa Falls branch is in the heart of this high-need region,” Rick Risler, St. Croix’s statewide executive director for Wisconsin, said in a statement. “Consistent with our unique care delivery model, this new branch ensures that clinical staff are close to the communities they serve, helping us provide more patients and their families with responsive, high-quality care at a critical time in their lives.”
