Helping others is what nurse navigator Megan Trewhitt does for a living at the CHI MaryEllen Locher Breast Center in Chattanooga, Tennesse.

But sometimes, the person doing the comforting needs comfort.

After Trewhitt and her husband moved to Chattanooga in 2017, she was a nurse, and something happened along the way that gave her a new perspective.

Trewhitt was diagnosed with breast cancer at 34 and saw a new side of what nurse navigators do. Her experience inspired her to become a nurse navigator to help navigate patients through the same treatment process she received by connecting them to resources and information to make informed decisions.

Daily Nurse proudly recognizes Megan Trewhitt as our Nurse of the Week, honoring her commitment to helping others in need.

“Some need a lot of hand-holding and hugs, and others just need a little extra push to get through it,” says Trewhitt. She and other nurse navigators have been with breast cancer patients from the very beginning.

Trewhitt admits some days are difficult. “This is something people are going through regardless of whether we’re there.”

After her diagnosis, Trewhitt needed a nurse navigator. “I’m a cancer patient too, so I know how hard it is at times, and having people help you through, it gets you through it.”

Her nurse navigator is still at CHI.

“She was there to answer questions I didn’t know the answers to, so when I was ready to come back to work, I said, ‘I want your job,’ and here I am,” says Trewhitt.

Trewhitt is happy to call her nurse navigator, her colleague now, and says she’s doing well and living her best life.
