The lower respiratory tract begins at the vocal cords. Inferior to the vocal cords lies the cricoid cartilage, which encases the 1.5 to 2 cm subglottic space. Inferior to the cricoid cartilage is the trachea. The typical adult trachea is 10 to 12 cm in length.
