Fall Prevention Tips

As we age, our balance starts to falter and it is important to prevent falls as much as possible. So, we thought we would share some fall prevention tips for you or your aging loved ones. Here is a list of 10 things you can do to help prevent a fall that could lead to more serious injuries.

  1. Install handrails and grab bars along staircases, hallways, and in bathrooms.
  2. Improve lighting in the house by adding lamps, brighter bulbs and nightlights.
  3. Have your vision checked regularly.
  4. Remove or tack down all throw rugs. Rugs can be a safety hazard, especially for seniors. As we age, our balance starts to falter. So, by removing hazards like loose rugs, you can reduce the risk of falls.
  5. Rearrange furniture to create clear paths to walk in the home.
  6. Wear shoes with good rubber soles.
  7. Sit down to get dressed and put your shoes on.
  8. Make sure a healthcare professional is managing your current medications. Some medicines can effect balance.
  9. Exercise regularly. Having a sturdy core can help your balance.
  10. Get rid of cords in your house or tuck them out of the walkway.

These fall prevention tips will help prevent aging adults from falling and potentially breaking or injuring a bone or muscle. The older we get, the longer it takes to recover from a fall. That is why it is really important to have fall prevention protocols in place.
