The book writing continueth and other news!

Hi everyone! I thought I’d keep the site active and update folks on my writing and some other significant news.

First, writing has proven to be quite a challenge. I’ve never been the most disciplined writer, or most disciplined anything for that matter, so writing tends to come in fits and starts when I have time. Even when I do have time, I often find it interrupted by something, either a dog needing to go outside or my own brain working overtime on something else. But I have begun looking at publishing options, so we are at least reaching that stage. More to come, including maybe some sample chapters!

Second, I’ve been strongly reconsidering my membership in CPSP. As I’ve worked more and more in leadership positions, I’ve seen more and more dysfunction. Over the past year, things have really come to a head to the point where I don’t believe I can continue on in CPSP much longer unless things change drastically at the national level. Because of this, I’ve taken off a few articles that I had written about certification through CPSP, because I don’t think I can recommend it right now.

Finally, on a better note, I recently got back from a trip with my wife to Colorado. It was a wonderful time to reconnect and simply relax in nature. We’d never been there before and it was a great experience, although my wife would also add “terrifying” to that description. The term “road” in Colorado is applied very loosely.

Thank you everyone and I will try and keep things updated more often.

  1. Great to hear from you!

Sorry to hear about your CPSP experience, but respect your decision. Since active retirement from chaplaincy and inability to hook up with a chapter I quit. It has ben a great help to me over the years. Not sure what is going on now, and if there is anything I could do to lend support to you claims, please let me know.

I’ve admired your efforts in The Chaplain’s Report and hope you will continue to offer a place for chaplains to share their stories. If you do continue, I’ll send you a piece of two about my experiences since leaving active duty.

My wife, Pat and I, now live at a retirement facility of 80 people in Goodyear, Arizona. We miss Colorado, where I was trained and CPSP-certified.

    Good luck with your book!

  2. This is disconcerting as I am considering and have an interview for a residency at a facility that recently switched from ACPE to CPSP. I know that CPSP is not regarded as well as ACPE is, particularly if one wishes to pursue Board Certification and start a career. If I cannot get into a program that will further my CPE with ACPE this year, CPSP may be a decent way to continue training until I can get a residency at an ACPE facility. What’s a year, right?

    Thank you for your insight.

    • Thank you Toni. I’d written previously that CPE through CPSP is still beneficial, but depending on where one chooses to pursue further credentialing it may not completely fulfill requirements. ACPE as far as I know still only accepts 1 unit of CPE through CPSP. Other organizations such as SCA are less stringent. So it could still be beneficial, but I think it’s best to look forward and see where you’d rather end up. If ACPE certification is your goal, stick with an ACPE program. If you can’t do a residency this year, consider volunteering!
