After taking hits during the pandemic, nonprofit hospices are seeing supplemental revenue from resale thrift stores rebound. Many hospice organizations operate these stores to raise money for their programs. Several had to close these stores during the pandemic, losing valuable revenue sources for their under-funded services.

Supported by its philanthropic arm Friends of Hospice, the organization also operates two thrift stores, dubbed as Foothills Gift & Thrift. Thrift store revenue is allocated to support its Sierra Community Palliative Care program and bereavement services as well as to fund caregiver grants.

HIA Hospice also operates a thrift store. In 2019, HIA Hospice launched a second nonprofit brand, House Calls, which provides home-based hospice and palliative care. The initiative was fueled by state-funded grant dollars to help care for underserved areas in North Dakota.
