It starts with a clinically competent medical staff, a medical staff who knows how to treat pain and knows how to treat nausea and vomiting, etc. We have a therapy dog. I think when I start defining it, it’s what good palliative care is considered all over. We’ve just been doing it for a long time.

I trusted sweet Willow would befriend a new dog, but I’d never had a Lab or any dog live past 12. Disco & Willow When she wasn’t sleeping, Willow watched me, lying on one of many dog beds scattered around the house. She’d never been a needy dog, but suddenly she needed to be near me.

Me, an RN, ended up in the ED to be treated for dehydration. Even science confirms that dogs make us feel less alone, help our hearts, lower cortisol levels, decrease stress, increase coping skills, and encourage us to move. I promised that when I could, I would rescue another wiener dog, since Lenci had rescued me.

Your dad had few requests before his death, but one was that you stand together and treat each other with kindness. I focus on my feet and feel my young dog Disco’s warm body at the foot of my bed. Almost fifty years later, the love remains, although there have been bumps in the road. Love is scarce in this world and demands tending.
