Two individuals in California have been arrested for their roles in a $54 million scheme to defraud Medicare for hospice and diagnostic testing. One of the alleged perpetrators, Sophia Shaklian, has been charged with 16 counts of health care fraud and four for transactional money laundering. A second, Alex Alexsanian, is charged with one count of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments and three counts of concealment money laundering.

Hospice providers in the southeastern United States are reeling from the impacts of two massive hurricanes that have occurred during the past two weeks. The first, Hurricane Helene, was the deadliest storm to hit the U.S. mainland since Katrina in 2005. The death toll as of Oct. 25 reached 225, the Associated Press reported. Affected states include Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

Someone important enough to travel over 1000km to see, despite her poor health. Her life had become a struggle over the last three years. Her lung failure had caused heart failure. Shortness of breath made even walking difficult. Leg swelling caused leg heaviness which made walking torturous at times.
