Lawmakers have put forth bills in both the Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives to foster greater utilization of advance care planning. The Compassionate Care Act would establish a nationwide public education campaign to educate the people in the United States about the importance of advance care planning, including grants and pilot initiatives to educate students in medical, nursing, social work and other related fields about end-of-life discussions and care.

VNS Health Develops AI Methodology for Palliative Care Patient Assessments

Research by VNS Health has found that generative AI systems can help clinicians better assess and predict patients’ palliative care needs. The nonprofit recently conducted a case study of three individuals in which staff evaluated methods for using AI to generate a clinical decision support tool. The AI system, an open-source large language model, translated diagnostic and billing codes into a narrative format to identify patients’ needs.
